Getting to this situation demands plenty of work. she/he have to get at first a cover of a feeder away

then jump inside the feeder and start to eat.

We have tried stop them in every way but we don`t manage, they always beat us :)

So we made it easy to them and also to birds, everybody is happy except my husband sometimes

when he finds out that seeds are finished - again!

These photos are from last autumn, when squirrels already had a grey fur.

The sun has just gone behind a forest.

This Nymphalis antiopa, known as the Mourning Cloak in North America and the Camberwell Beauty in Britain tried to find a warm place, time of butterflies is over here now, too cold nights and also days can not give warm enough to them any more.

Evenings are going to darken soon now and our thoughts start to move slowly towards an autumn.

Koli National Park belongs to definitely visited places every summer also in grandchildren`s opinion.

Even it was a cloudy day, we all enjoyed.

And Kiki is always a biggest fan of sunsets.

I took three first photos just an hour ago this evening, but they are only mobile photos.

This cloud was for small girls, I think :)

And Kiki dog will be 10 years after few days and she still can enjoy sunsets.

Blue and pink started to play on the sky. . . .

Every night has their special atmosphere, nights are now going to darken, but fortunately still very slowly.

Our 12 years old grandson took this photo from a setting sun between her sister`s fingers :)

It was a wonderful night at the lake with the grandchildren once more - hoping still many others same kind of nights in coming years.

I took these photos by my new Nokia phone (Nokia C6-01, I have had always Nokia and will have ;)

They are "sooc" (= straight out of camera).

I use here in the summer cottage a small laptop, that`s why I see the photos only as small and can not say much about their quality, you see it better.

These night shots are taken 00.25am from our pier.
These are especially for Babzy :)

Again I got a swimming mate in the lake, who needed rescuing.

Almost drowned but not quite, so. . . .

I put it on a leaf

But he/she did not seem to be very happy at first. . .

After few moments in the sunshine made

the bug feel good or

This species is quite unfamiliar to me.

These photos are taken last night about 23.30pm
Sunrise today at 3:07. Sunset today at 23:02. Length of day is 19 h 55 min.

As you can see it is quite light, I could see to read without any artificial lights.

The sunset is over but the sunlight is coming still inderictly

It is a gull, who is following our boat, but my camera settings were for the sunset, so, I got a ghost gull!

This Sirex woodwasp, Sirex noctilio, was almost drowned, when I took it from a lake on a leaf and got some photos.

One of thousands of leaf beetles was on the same leaf

The leaf beetle was a moment as a prison, but it was soon over - no harm at all :)

As you can see this female has a long egg tube. ( I do not know a correct word for it, sorry )
The species has very bad reputation because of it damages forests.

Platanthera bifolia, commonly known as the Lesser Butterfly-orchid, is also a species of orchid

The sky after hottest day ever in Finland. The record was just in my

It was the year 1939, when the Winter War started and the year 1940, when my father`s family had to leave their home in Karelia, which was a healthy part of Finland then.

The other families in Finland gave homes for those almost half of million evacuated Finns. The whole population was under four millions in those days.

My mother`s family gave home to my father`s family in the western part of Finland, faraway from Russian border.

There were two sisters in that house and two brothers had lost their home - you can guess, what was happening then :)

The sisters got the brothers or vice versa, should I say :)
In this photo - in the autumn 1940 - is taken in the engagement day of my mother`s sister and my father`s brother. They are standing nearer each other instead my future mother and my future father are farther away from each other.
They had their engagement rings later and the war started again.
The sister`s home is seen behind.

Now one of my double cousin is living in Washington,married US citizen.
One of their children is teaching English in her home country US and one is living in South Africa with her US citizen husband teaching Spanish, one was studying International politics as his father who is American diplomat :)

The other of my double cousin is living in Sweden with his Spanish wife . . .

And other two more are living happily in Finland with their children and grandchildren.

This photo tells a story about my parents and me, taken some day of the summer in 1943. The father has got a holiday from the war, which was happening also during this summer.
I am the only child, but it is the another story.
My father came back from the war, when I was two years old, we were so lucky getting him back.

Sepia Saturday # 30 / My paternal grandparents

This is their engagement photo about 1908 taken in my grandmother`s home town in the south western part of Finland, but they lived their lives in Karelia. During II WW they had to left their home and get a new place to live. This was at first in my mother`s home - my story started after that but I will tell it later :)

My grandmother was very tall woman, perhaps her "tall genes" came from my grandmother`s mother, who was Swedish coming from Skåne in Sweden.

My husband`s grandfather is on the photo with his good race horse.
I apologize a poor quality of this photo, but it is taken about 1910, when he has been participating in a harness racing event.
His name was Gustav Adolf Schön, but he - as many, many others - change their names into Finnish name before Finland got it`s independent 1917. Our history is written briefly HERE
Schön was a soldier name given 1600s.

I love this photo about my mother sitting on a fence. She looks so glad and young laughing with her cousin, who died few years later by a tuberculosis.
I don`t know the exact year, when the photo is taken, but it has to be at the end of 1930s.

The fence has been a good place to pose :)
My mother`s two years younger sister is whispering something to her ear, I would like to know, what was it.

The child on my mother`s lap is not me but her cousin`s, whose wife and mom of this child is standing in the photo.

Other women with their children are some friends, whom I don`t know.

My husband`s mother and other relatives spending relaxing Sunday long before my husband was born :)

Their homes were - and still are - on the shore of the big lake as so many farms and towns and villages in Finland. Lakes and rivers belong to our lives here very strongly.

I took these photos from a historical drama played outside. But I was on the other side of the river and a distance was about 200 meters. I did not have even a tripod.

These birds are some, who manage also in our winter. Sometimes it is hard to understand, especially, when we have -30Celsius and only few hours daylight for getting some to eat.

Now the daylight is over two hours longer than during Christmas, but a snow cover will last still over two months more.
Hoping as many as possible will survive!

Sunny days have been very rare lately and the sun is still quite low even in the midday,

but it is greatly welcome after a dark weeks.

Sun rises 9:19 and sets 14:59. Length of day is 5 h 40 min.

Days are lenghtening about 4-5 minutes every day now, it feels really good.

Ski tracks are ready waiting for skiers, birches has been beautifully covered by hoarfrost now.

Actually everything has covered by snow or hoarfrost as these rowanberries, which have got warm snowcoat.

Our homestreet is very peaceful in the evenings.

As you can see, they decided to help me by knitting their cobwebs everywhere!

European sheet-web spider (Linyphia triangularis Araneae: Linyphiidae) is the most common spider in Finland. Their catch just drops to the horizontal cobweb. Only females are knitting webs, and it`s easy to understand ;)

Also Kiki was helping me, because I could not find a spider!

FINNISH STONE CENTER

Near Koli is located Finnish stone center, where we can find and learn many things.

The real reason, why we went again to this familiar place, was Fabergé exposition
there.

We are, of course, particularly interested in those wonderful art works, because most of workmasters of Faberge were Finnish as Alma Phil`s parents.
Alma Phil designed 1913 Winter Egg ( you can see the picture by clicking here ) which was presented to the czar's mother, Maria Feodorovna ( Princess Dagmar of Denmark ) and it is Alma`s most famous master piece together with her other brilliant work. The final masterpiece attributed to Pihl is the Mosaic Egg, presented by Nicholas II to Czarina Alexandra Feodorovna on Easter 1914 (Now it belongs to
The Royal Collection of Great Britain )
It`s said, that the winter Egg is one of the most beautiful jeweler art pieces in the world.

"The exterior of the egg is studded with 1,660 diamonds , and made from quartz, platinum, and orthoclase. The miniature surprise basket is studded with 1,378 diamonds and is made from platinum and gold, while the flowers are made of white quartz and the leaves are made of demantoid . The flowers lie in gold moss.
The egg sold for US $ 9.6 million in 2002", tells Wikipedia. It is now in Qatar.

So we did not see it, but we saw Fabergé’s last and unfinished Imperial Easter Egg.
This item has left the Russian territory only twice before this, and it was never finished because of happenings of 1917. It is very beautiful even as unfinished.

Photos were forbidden and I was a good girl, though it was very difficult, very!!

Perhaps these photos tell you something, what you did not see in yesterday`s photo.
It is very big cliff there, you can see those tops of spruces, they are faraway.

Koli has inspired many Finnish artists too.

"Eero Järnefelt was especially inspired by nature in the Koli area, nowadays Koli National Park. Together with A.W. Finch and Ilmari Aalto, he painted a large scene of Koli in 1911. It can be seen in the restaurant of Helsinki railway station." tells

Jean Sibelius and his wife Aino Järnefelt (the sister of this painter Eero Järnefelt )
made their wedding trip to Karelia including Koli, which made a great impression on Sibelius.

And many other artists have got impressions from Koli`s atmosphere and landscapes.

Heavy snow has cut a top of this pine and bent it`s branches.

Also a birch has got too much snow and frost, it has been suffering and the shape is
like that.

Of course, children know always, how they can use those shapes.

Really, it was a short lapse and the biggest reason for coming back
was ads in a free version of Wordpress. I did not know that.
And free Blogger is much more flexible than free Wordpress.

I took this photo from Koli, where we were hiking yesterday.
Koli is one of 35 National Parks in Finland.
It`s only 60km from Joensuu, therefor it`s our priority place for hiking and picnicking.
I have been there first time in my early childhood. It was a big happening in my life, because
my granddad took me with him. It was the year 1952 and
the Olympic games of Helsinki had finished, the foreign visitors game to Koli after the games.
It was so exciting for the child.

They came to show their babies to us this morning. After two months those small ones could have energy enough to make their migration journey.
I send my best greetings with them to you from our summer cottage.

Sun rises 3:57 and sets 22:15. Length of day is 18 h 18 min.
Nights are almost two hours shorter than one month ago, but we can enjoy still few weeks about Finnish varying summer weather.

But I need a long brake now from blogging.

And this GrassWatcher made me forget days and watch the sky, instead , I saw
a bluist colour in her eyes and I tried to get away all clouds from them.
And I got my award - the smiling face all day long, two new teeth coming and many bugs in the grass :)

I saw the whole diver family, the parents and two babies, but they dived away after seeing me, so I was late with my camera. But I am hoping. . .
